Anime Genres

Anime has some unique genres. For example the most popular genre of anime is Shounen. Shounen includes stories with a lot of fighting and action, aimed to teen boys, usually about young male main character going through adventures (example of a famous shounen anime is Naruto). Opposite to Shounen is Shoujo , shows aimed to young girls, that focuse in relationships and romance. Next, there is an anime genre for stories full of fantasy, about shifting to another world- Isekai ; or anime category for storytelling in worlds with giant robots- Mecha ; or even genre called Slice of life- simply about someone’s everyday life. What is more, there are subgenres of those. For example „Slice of life” includes a funny subgenre, called Moe or „Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” (CGDCT). These are animes that have no action, no character development, and are just some light-hearted stories with comedy elements. There are many more anime categories, but these were some main ones and examples of how ...

Anime and voice acting

Anime voice acting is very different then regular voice acting in cartoons. The whole process of recording Japanese voice track is pretty much the same as in regular cartoons, but the difference is in the acting part. Usually, anime characters are shown with many moods, emotions and expressions, so their voices need to match all of that. So anime voice acting is full of shouting, yelling and even a lot of strange mouth noises included. Sometimes, even the breathing is very intense. As if that was not enough, most of the female characters in anime have insanely high-pitched voices, because in Japan it is associated with being girlish, so the actresses are making their anime dialogs in upper range. It is clear that voice acting in anime doesn’t sound accurate and natural, but for some people it is „too much” and even obnoxious to watch. This way of voice acting may seem strange, but in my opinion it is still very impressive and it spikes up your emotions. I also think it suits the anime ...

How Anime is made?

The process of creating anime always goes through some general steps. First, the story idea- that usually comes from manga-is being converted into the script and divided into episodic length. Then there’s the pre-production state, where the director does some financial preparations and finds right people for the actual production. When all that is done, the director needs to complete the script in the visual way, which is called creating the storyboard. Storyboard is doing some rough sketches including perspective, background and the layout for every scene, that then the key animators can turn into high quality key frames -the first and last frame of smooth motion. Usually anime has 24 frames per one second, so when the key animators to their job of only couple of frames, the rest is drawn by „in-between” artists. Lastly, finished animations require recording voice tracks and whole audio work needs to be done. After all that we can watch our favorite anime episode, which in my opinion ...

History of anime- Osamu Tezuka

Talking about history of modern anime it is crucial to mention the name of Osamu Tezuka- biggest influence on anime and manga industry, also tittled as „the godfather of anime”. Tezuka began manga revolution with his work-„New Treasure Island” in 1947, but one of most iconic stories of his is „Astro boy”- a humanoid robot named Atom. „Astro boy” became a success in Japan, firstly as a manga in 1952, and then in 1963 as an anime, getting really popular in young boys, who adored the main character and his adventures. On his account he has also famous anime „Black Jack”- about incredibly talented, but unlicensed surgeon, anime „Kimba: the white lion”, and lastly Osamu’s life work –„Phoenix”- story of life and death.  Also, looking at Osamu’s work we can see his heavy inspirations in Walt Disney, for example „Kimba” is pretty much Japanese equivalent of „The Lion King”. He is also the person that brought big eyed characters to Japanese animations, and his influence on the industry is s...

What exactly is anime?

Anime is a specific type of animation that comes from Japan. Every single anime has its own perticular art style, but in their uniqness, they also share some indicators that lead it to an "anime look". Anime characters usually have detailed, large eyes, tiny mouths and noses, and colorful or even bizaare hairstyles. Usually, an anime episode lasts from 20 to 25 minutes and includes an opening that is a short animation that contains hints of the plot, while being synchronised to an original catchy song. Length of each anime is different, there are ones that are 12 episodes long, or ones like for example „One piece” and has over 900 episodes. Also it’s worth mentioning that most animes are based on Japanese comic books-Mangas, and can teach us about some Japanese manners. There are even anime movies, anime video games and so much more than you can think of. I think anime is not only a cartoon, but a big part of Japanese culture. Sorce: https://youtu.be/1dQQCtNiGYk
