This Friday on 14th the October well-known Van Gogh’s „Sunflowers” have been attacked by Just Stop Oil activists with tomato soup. The Stop oil group lately have been trying to gain attention by sit-down protests on roads or by glueing themselfs to paintings, but only by throwing Heinz tomato soup at one of the most famous images has helped them achieve that goal. The activists claim that they are doing it to „ensure that the government commits to ending all new licenses and consents for the exploration, development and production of fossil fuels in the UK." Honestly, at first when I heard the news I was shocked and concerned for this beautiful piece of art and I wanted to know why it happened, but basically it means that this demonstration was (in my opinion) a pretty successful one. Mostly because It got loads of attention on a topic, which I’m pretty sure not many people had cared much about before, all while not hurting anyone and making only reversible damages on the painting. But there is a bad side, because there are people that only got angry by this behaviour, so it got bad fame as well and group now has many opponents and seems even more controversial. To sum it up, the Stop Oil activists have definitely risen more awareness on this crisis, but I’m not really sure if their actions were appropriate.

I'm afraid for many people who are mostly indifferent to the climate crisis these girls just look crazy, fanatical extremists. But suffragettes had such an image too and they finally won the fight.
